Malak
She might be just 20 years old, but Malak El Husseiny’s debut EP showcases a confidence that’s more commonly associated with an artist several albums into their career. Happily, that confidence isn’t misplaced. Malak’s vocals are warm, evocative and pitch-perfect. And the EP’s smartly sparse, mainly electronic, instrumentation wisely gives them room to soar. The five tracks on the EP – from the Lana Del Rey-esque single “Alters (A Little Closer)” to the strong closing track “All We’ve Got” – are all mid-tempo slow burners with a pop feel, making it a little one-paced. But Alters is a strong statement of intent, and shows Malak is an artist worth watching out for.
