Despite its rather simple premise (two adult sons return to their parents’ house once a week for a meal), there’s a lot crammed into the first series of Friday Night Dinner. This very British show – heavy on the observational minutiae, light on overblown set-pieces and slapstick – boasts a cast of Brit-com heavyweights. Tamsin Greig (Black Books, Green Wing), Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners) and Mark Heap (Spaced, Green Wing) are all engaging leads, while Paul Ritter as the hard-of-hearing, perpetually shirtless dad, and Tom Rosenthal as the prank-loving younger son, more than hold their own against their more recognizable co-stars. There are a number of keen observations that will resonate with Brit viewers – Bird’s and Rosenthal’s characters instantly regress to a childlike state upon entering the family home, while Greig’s exasperated matriarch looks helplessly on as her family bicker like school kids. Heap, essentially reprising his bumbling Green Wing character, is fantastic as creepy neighbor Jim – complete with a Belgian Shepherd dog that he’s terrified of – and the smart script is littered with the kind of sibling melodrama that is as familiar as it is amusing. Like most half-decent U.K. shows, there’s already talk of a U.S. remake. Best to check out the original.
