Olivia Colman, Peter Mullan

Paddy Considine’s directorial debut (he also wrote it) shares certain traits with the work of his friend Shane Meadows: the bleakness of English inner cities, the violence that lurks behind net curtains. But this is no copycat effort. Helped by two astonishing performances – Olivia Colman as Christian charity-shop worker Hannah and Peter Mullan as the alcoholic Joseph, a bad man struggling to become better – Considine has crafted a movie with a voice all its own. There’s little optimism on display, but that’s not the point. This is an honest, moving portrayal of two people thrown together by their separate suffering.
